Kaloja (simply “some fish” in Finnish) is the new duo of musicians Jan Anderzén (Tomutonttu, Kemialliset Ystävät, Tarzana) and Paul Wilson (F.Ampism, Yayoba). With past solo and ensemble releases on labels such as Leaving Records, Hive Mind, Ikuisuus and Not Not Fun, the artists have carved for themselves an iconic sonic niche tinkering with the potentialities of synthesis, psychedelic composition, physical modeling, impressionistic reveries and micro/macro worldbuilding.

In line with the wordplay and title of the album A Body of Water, what stands out in the meeting of these two sound-heads is the strangely pastoral quality that emerges when their pieces are infused with the duo’s mastery of technological arrays. While the tracks retain much of the Finnish school’s signature sound—shaped in large part by Anderzén over the years, with its upbeat, harmonically reassuring and compositionally rich character—Wilson’s iconic, biome-like approach to sonic manipulation makes every sound feel alive, hyper-tactile, and possessed of a will of its own. The result is a curious ensemble of abstract figures moving through an unstable landscape governed by unfamiliar laws, a setting that feels uncannily familiar without ever becoming hostile. From digital harmoniums to mock strings, simulated voices, and glass-like resonances, the textures continually shift. Much like the artists’ graphics and photographs accompanying the release, Kaloja occupies the interstice between the cosmic and the earthly, expanding its sonic life force from that point. A Body of Water ultimately feels like a folkloric ode to strange, unseen weather phenomena and distant cosmic ages.
